Mudavadi accuses opposition of plot to discredit IEBC, rallies Western to back Ruto in 2027

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has cautioned opposition leaders against attempting to undermine the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) ahead of the 2027 General Election. Mudavadi urged political leaders and candidates to maintain the credibility and independence of the commission, ensuring that any issues are raised through evidence, transparency, lawful oversight, and established dispute-resolution mechanisms.

He warned that attacking the IEBC could erode public confidence and stability in democratic processes. Mudavadi also criticized the opposition for attempting to repeat the divide-and-rule tactics seen in previous election years, particularly during Wafula Chebukati's term, when the commission was divided. He defended the IEBC's independence, citing the successful recent by-elections conducted under the parameters of free, fair, and credible polls.

Mudavadi urged opposition parties not to dictate to the IEBC, as decisions made by the commission are internal and guided by the constitution and law. He urged aspirants in the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to go beyond their comfort zones and ensure President William Ruto secures a parliamentary majority in the next Parliament, as failing to do so could weaken Ruto's coalition and potentially lead to a lame-duck presidency for him in 2027.

Mudavadi emphasized that plans are underway to establish a coalition framework between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and UDA, with a focus on ensuring President Ruto has the majority he needs to be a strong leader in his second term.
