Money bouquets, spraying and dancing on cash unlawful – BoG warns

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding the improper handling and misuse of Ghanaian currency. Officials have stated that those found engaging in such activities could face legal consequences, including arrest and prosecution. The BoG has highlighted a surge in practices such as spraying money at events, tossing notes on the ground, stepping or dancing on them, and crafting bouquets, jewelry, and other decorative items using banknotes.

The central bank emphasized that these behaviors undermine the quality, functionality, and dignity of Ghana's currency. Specifically, the BoG condemned the creation of money bouquets for weddings, birthdays, graduations, and similar celebrations, deeming it improper and against the law. Additionally, the bank cautioned against damaging any form of currency, such as tearing, crumpling, staining, soiling, writing on, cutting, or otherwise mistreating banknotes and coins.

Other prohibited actions include unauthorized use of Ghanaian currency images and trading coins beyond their face value. The BoG explained that its notes and coins are exclusively issued as legal tender and must be treated carefully to maintain their condition and usability. The institution stressed the considerable resources invested in currency production and maintenance, urging the public to contribute to safeguarding its integrity.

The BoG is collaborating with law enforcement to enhance surveillance and take swift action against those violating currency regulations. It urged citizens, businesses, and institutions to handle Ghana cedi notes and coins responsibly and promptly report any suspected violations to the relevant authorities.
