Mariners’ Lazaro Montes: leaves game with hip injury

Seattle Mariners' rookie player Lazaro Montes suffered a hip injury during a game against the Athletics on September 4th, 2026. While attempting to catch a fly ball in the fifth inning, Montes collided with the right field wall and fell down. Despite managing to throw the ball to center fielder Julio Rodríguez, Montes writhed in pain on the ground for several moments.

After being examined by the training staff, he continued to play for another two hitters before leaving the game. Mariners' bench coach Dan Wilson stated that Montes felt good initially but experienced additional discomfort during the collision. The team announced Montes left the game with a left hip soreness, which was visible by his limp as he exited the field.

Thankfully, x-rays revealed no fractures. If Montes needs to miss time, hot-hitting prospect Michael Arroyo could potentially replace him. However, Arroyo was currently away in Albuquerque, meaning he wouldn't be able to join the team immediately. Arroyo had a solid performance in today's game, hitting two runs and contributing a sacrifice fly in an 11-6 loss to the Isotopes.
