Manisha Koirala on feeling lonely during cancer: ‘That night was the loneliest and longest’

In 2012, actress Manisha Koirala discovered she had stage IV ovarian cancer. Despite widespread pessimism, she underwent an 11-hour operation and numerous chemotherapy sessions, ultimately overcoming the disease in 2013. During her battle, Koirala recounted feeling profoundly isolated during her treatment. In the daytime, professionals informed her of her diagnosis; in the evening, she experienced a night of profound loneliness.

She described this period as the "loneliest and longest" of her life, emphasizing the emotional toll of being a cancer patient. Koirala noted that social gatherings, such as Bollywood events, felt forced and distasteful, amplifying her sense of isolation. Dr Amit Chakraborty, a head and neck surgeon, explained that cancer inflicts not only physical afflictions but also emotional turmoil for both patients and their families.

Patients grapple with fear, uncertainty, and numerous challenges throughout their treatment. In addition to the physical aspects of cancer, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy, patients often contend with anxiety about their future, alterations in their appearance, financial strain, and the impact of treatment on their daily lives.

Dr Sajjan Rajpurohit, director of medical oncology at BLK Max Super Specialty Hospital in Delhi, underscored that cancer significantly impacts a patient's emotional health, affecting their mental state from diagnosis to treatment completion. He emphasized the importance of addressing mental health in cancer patients, noting that therapy and psychoeducation can significantly improve survival rates, reduce the fear of recurrence, and enhance patients' overall quality of life.
