Local ceasefire announced near Zaporizhzhia NPP to repair power line – IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has announced a localized ceasefire near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) to facilitate repairs to a crucial power line, according to Ukrinform. This agreement allows for the restoration of off-site power to the ZNPP following a significant outage that left the plant inoperable, reported IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi today.

The agency highlighted that military actions on the northern side of the Dnipro River severed the plant's sole power line, the 330 kilovolt Ferosplavna-1, on August 20. Consequently, the ZNPP has relied on emergency diesel generators for cooling its six reactors and spent fuel pools, placing the facility on the brink of a potential station blackout within days due to dwindling diesel fuel reserves.

Under this temporary ceasefire, Ukrainian technicians are set to commence repairs on the power line once the area has been cleared of mines. Grossi emphasized that both parties have been engaging positively with the IAEA to ensure nuclear safety and security. The IAEA will oversee the repair process during this ceasefire, the seventh such truce in the ongoing conflict.

Since August 20, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been operating solely on diesel generators.
