‘Leader’ Raphinha rising to Barca striker challenge

Barcelona's Raphinha is set to continue as the team's leading striker in the coming weeks, despite their unsuccessful pursuit of Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez. The Brazilian winger has scored five goals in just three games, playing out of position as the team's number nine. Barcelona currently sits at the top of La Liga, tied on nine points with Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid, with Real Betis also tied at nine points.

The Catalan club failed to sign their desired forward, replacing Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, who both left earlier in the summer. They instead signed Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus, who acknowledged that it will be difficult for him to elevate an already strong attacking lineup. Raphinha is expected to maintain his role as the team's center-forward, with coach Hansi Flick likely to rotate players during the start of the Champions League.

Last season, Raphinha faced several injury issues, but his integration under Hansi Flick has been a significant improvement. The German coach described Raphinha as one of Barcelona's leaders, praising his work rate and ability to set the tone. Raphinha, who recently became the team's captain, has impressed with his performances, scoring twice in the opener against Elche, once in the 2-0 win against Athletic Bilbao, and twice against Rayo Vallecano.

While there remains a question as to whether he can maintain his current form over a long period, Raphinha has proven himself adaptable to various challenges since joining Barcelona in 2022.
