LASU condemns assault of student at off-campus hostel, begins probe

Lagos State University, LASU, has strongly condemned an alleged assault of one of its students at a private hostel outside the university campus, according to a statement issued by the university on Friday. The incident, involving students of LASU's College of Medicine, took place at a private hostel located outside the university's premises.

The university's Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, announced that disciplinary action has been initiated against the students allegedly involved in the incident. The affected student reported the matter to the police, and law enforcement authorities have since taken appropriate steps to address the situation.

Despite the assault occurring outside the university, LASU management has commenced an internal disciplinary process in accordance with the institution's rules and regulations. The university unequivocally condemns any act of violence, intimidation, or harassment, regardless of whether it occurs on or off-campus. Thomas-Onashile emphasized that such behavior is inconsistent with the values and principles upheld by the university.

She reminded students of their obligation to maintain a worthy character and learning, aligning with LASU's mission to produce graduates with academic excellence and good moral conduct. The university urged students to exercise caution in their daily activities and to report security threats, incidents, and concerns to the relevant authorities immediately.

Parents and guardians were also called upon to cooperate with the university in promoting discipline and encouraging their wards to demonstrate discipline, integrity, and responsible behavior. LASU reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of its students and stated that it would continue working to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment for all students.
