Lankan designer presents cyanotype artwork to King Charles

Sri Lankan fashion designer Ruwanthi Gajadeera showcased her original cyanotype artwork to King Charles III during a garden party in London. The event celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship. The artwork, named Eka Mawakage Daruwo, translates to "Children of One Mother" and pays tribute to shared identity and belonging among ethnic and religious groups within Sri Lanka.

Drawing inspiration from the nation's national anthem, Gajadeera weaved together the national flowers of all 56 Commonwealth countries within the piece. The centerpiece features a crown, symbolizing unity, and includes an endangered High Brown Fritillary butterfly. Utilizing traditional cyanotype methods, each flower was meticulously hand-drawn and the paper sensitized before exposure to sunlight.

The resulting deep blue hue arises from a chemical reaction, rather than pigments, reflecting the designer's dedication to sustainable fashion practices. The ceremony was graced by League trustees, Commonwealth delegates, High Commissioners, including Sri Lanka's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Nimal Senadheera, and students in residence.

King Charles, a patron of the League, presented a commemorative plaque and engaged with the young participants. Gajadeera, an MA graduate in Fashion from the Royal College of Art, continues to establish her studio practice in London through InnovationRCA. Her creations seamlessly blend Sri Lankan handloom heritage, natural dyeing techniques, and cyanotype processes.
