Italian GP: Pierre Gasly stuns Monza again with his first-ever pole position

Alpine's French driver Pierre Gasly achieved a remarkable milestone by clinching his maiden pole position at the Italian GP on Saturday. The 24-year-old secured pole ahead of Mercedes' George Russell with an impressive lap of one minute and 21.786 seconds, narrowly edging out the Briton by 0.060 seconds. Gasly was already leading Q1 and finished fourth fastest in Q2.

He was the final contender to complete his final flying lap, marking his ninth year of striving for this opportunity. Speaking after the qualifying session, Gasly expressed his excitement, saying, "It’s been nine years trying to chase the opportunity to get a pole. I won my first race in Monza and got my first pole at this track.

It’s something special around here." McLaren's Oscar Piastri qualified third and will start the race in the second row, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton securing the final two spots on the grid. Lewis Hamilton secured fifth place on the grid, one slot ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who was last year's race winner.

However, Mercedes' championship leader Kimi Antolin, who is 59 points clear of Russell and Hamilton, qualified seventh but will start from the back due to engine penalties. Russell praised Gasly's exceptional performance, stating, "We were finishing a game of chess about 15 minutes before qualifying and he beat me there and I went well, I think I will beat you in qualifying, and here we are, he’s ahead of me again."

Russell also expressed his disappointment over not securing pole position, attributing it to an intense competition with Max Verstappen. Gasly's achievement makes him the first Frenchman to take pole position at this race since Jean Alesi for Benetton in 1997.
