‘Homeless’ NPFL quartet seek continental glory

Nigeria's path to continental football glory begins this weekend with a unique challenge for the country's four representatives: they will play African matches away from their home stadiums. Enugu Rangers, Rivers United, Shooting Stars, and El-Kanemi Warriors earned their spots in the 2026/27 CAF inter-club competitions, but they won't enjoy the comfort of their usual league grounds.

The Confederation of African Football's accreditation rules have highlighted a persistent issue in Nigerian football: a lack of stadiums capable of hosting international club competitions. This setback goes beyond just playing against opponents from Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, and Tunisia. The clubs must also cope with unfamiliar surroundings, different travel, and less fan support as they strive to carry Nigeria's flag across Africa.

Enugu Rangers, the defending champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League, lead the Champions League campaign. They face Benin Republic champions AS Sobemap in the first preliminary round, with the first leg planned for September 6 at MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta. This is a change from their usual home ground, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, which is currently being renovated to meet CAF standards.

Despite the disruption, Rangers captain Amobi Ezeaku remains confident, citing the team's strong mentality from their league opener against Katsina United. For the other clubs, the situation is similar. Rivers United will play at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, and Shooting Stars will host their matches at MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.

El-Kanemi Warriors will face their continental opponents at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne. This infrastructure problem highlights the challenges facing Nigerian football's ambition to regain its influence in African club football.
