Harmanpreet Kaur becomes first to captain a team in 150 T20 internationals

Harmanpreet Kaur achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player to captain a team in 150 T20Is across men's and women's international cricket. She reached this milestone during India's 2026 Women's Asia Cup match against Pakistan. Her first captaincy was also against Pakistan in the Women's Asia Cup final in October 2012, following Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami's injuries.

India won that match by 18 runs, despite being all out for just 81 runs. Harmanpreet became India's regular T20I captain in October 2016 and led them to victory in the 2016 Women's Asia Cup. Her 150 matches as captain is the highest among Indian players, with the second-highest being Mithali's 32. MS Dhoni and Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu follow with 72 and 121 matches as captains respectively in both men's and women's T20Is.

Harmanpreet's win/loss record stands at 86 wins and 57 losses, resulting in a win percentage of 57.33 percent in her 150 captained matches. She is currently India's most-capped international player in women's cricket, having played her 356th T20I against Australia, surpassing New Zealand's Suzie Bates' record. Harmanpreet also became the first Indian captain to win the Women's World Cup last year.

India is currently in the semifinals of the 2026 Women's Asia Cup after winning against Thailand and Hong Kong. They aim to regain their dominance in the tournament, having lost the final in 2024 to Sri Lanka by eight wickets. This was the ninth edition of the Asia Cup, with India winning the first six editions consecutively between 2004 and 2016 before Bangladesh ended their streak in 2018. They secured their seventh title in 2022 before Sri Lanka claimed the trophy in the latest edition.
