As South Africa gears up for the Springboks' Rugby World Cup clash against New Zealand, law enforcement has seized counterfeit sports merchandise and equipment valued at over R1.5 million in a joint operation in Johannesburg. Acting on intelligence, the National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit led a multi-agency raid that uncovered more than 1,700 fake sports apparel and footwear items, including Springbok-branded merchandise.

The operation, which netted embossing machines, silkscreen plates, counterfeit labels, and other equipment used in fake goods production, also involved the South African Police Service, Gauteng Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit, Public Order Policing, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, and SARS Customs Division. Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk of SAPS emphasized the critical timing of the seizure, stating that criminals exploit fans' enthusiasm for the Springboks' encounter by flooding the market with counterfeit goods.

The operation, involving several search and seizure warrants, sent a strong message that illicit networks would not profit at the expense of consumers and legitimate businesses. Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and purchase sports merchandise only from authorized retailers, as counterfeit goods undermine the economy, hurt brand integrity, and pose safety risks.

The crackdown is part of ongoing nationwide efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in counterfeit and illicit goods, with the investigation continuing.
