(AP) — Washburn University and Colorado School of Mines faced off in a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II contest on Saturday, but extreme heat in central Kansas forced game officials to call an early end. The teams, despite playing to a 16-16 tie, were unable to extend the contest into overtime, marking a rare occurrence in collegiate sports.

The match's kickoff had been postponed to 9 a.m. in an attempt to mitigate the impact of record-setting temperatures, but the heat index soared over 100 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the game. Washburn coach Zach Watkins acknowledged the inclement weather, emphasizing the safety of the players as the primary concern. The last major college football tie took place in 1995, when Wisconsin and Illinois finished with identical records.
