Ex-English ref Mike Dean defends career after ‘secret games’ backlash

Mike Dean, a former Premier League referee who officiated 553 matches between 2000 and 2022, has defended his career after facing backlash over comments suggesting he and fellow officials played "secret games" during matches. On the Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party podcast, Dean revealed that he and other officials would sometimes challenge themselves to go long periods without blowing their whistles or remain in the center circle for as long as possible.

Dean, 61, stated that these activities were meant to be "a laugh" and were never intended to undermine the integrity of refereeing. He emphasized his commitment to applying the Laws of the Game and maintaining a high threshold for contact, as it allowed the game to flow and received positive feedback from players. Dean acknowledged that the comments drew criticism from fans and supporters, but maintained his respect for the profession and the responsibility of being a referee.
