‘Doubted her character’: Tribal woman stripped, assaulted in Rajasthan; 7 held

A 40-year-old tribal woman from Rajasthan's Banswara district was allegedly assaulted and stripped by her family members who "doubted her character" on September 1. The incident, which was captured on video and went viral, shows the woman being stripped and beaten by other women while some laughed and recorded the events. Banswara Deputy Superintendent of Police Babu Lal Regar stated that seven individuals, including the woman's husband and relatives, have been arrested.

According to Regar, the husband and six other relatives were charged with assault and using criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, along with other related offenses. The woman, who works as a laborer in a neighboring state, said her husband brought her back home after she had gone out to work. The family then made her walk barefoot on the street and later tonsured her head.

Police have conducted a medical examination on the woman, and the seven arrested individuals have been taken into custody. Congress leader Govind Singh Dotasra condemned the incident, calling it a shame on Rajasthan and criticizing the insensitive attitude of the police, who allegedly suppressed the atrocity for three days under the guise of needing "solid proof."
