Dolly Parton Day: List of Cities Hosting Events To Honor Icon

On September 25, communities across the United States are commemorating the late Dolly Parton's life and legacy. The date holds significance as it echoes "9 to 5," the title of Parton's 1980 hit song and film. As Parton passed away on August 25 at age 80, her passing has prompted a wave of tributes and official recognitions.

New Orleans and Lexington have planned public gatherings to honor the iconic singer-songwriter. In New Orleans, the Krewe of Dolly is organizing a Celebration of Life in the French Quarter, with participants expected to gather at Armstrong Park at 4 p.m. prior to a 5 p.m. parade that concludes at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Costumes inspired by Parton, Kenny Rogers, and other country music figures are encouraged.

Lexington's Parks and Recreation will host a free Dolly Day celebration at Moondance Amphitheater, featuring local musicians performing Parton's songs, food and drink vendors, and other activities. Mayor Brad Hoylman-Sigal of Manhattan has declared September 25, 2026, as Dolly Parton Appreciation Day, recognizing her contributions to music, entertainment, literacy, and public health. The Imagination Library has distributed over 300 million books to 3 million children worldwide since its inception.

Other jurisdictions, such as Montgomery County in Pennsylvania and New York's Senate Bill S10690, have issued proclamations recognizing September 25 as Dolly Parton Day. However, these do not typically announce accompanying public events. California has similarly established September 25 as Dolly Parton Day through Senate Bill 931, with the program in place for over 182,000 enrolled children across 45 counties.
