Counterfeit Springboks merchandise worth R1.5m seized in Johannesburg CBD

Over R1.5 million worth of counterfeit sports merchandise and manufacturing equipment was seized from a storage facility in Johannesburg CBD, as the Springboks prepare to face New Zealand in an upcoming rugby match. The Johannesburg Police Spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, revealed that over 1,700 counterfeit sports apparel and footwear items were taken from the facility.

The operation, led by the National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit, involved multiple law enforcement agencies including the Gauteng Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit, Public Order Policing Unit, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, South African Revenue Service Customs Division, and brand protection representatives.

The seized items included counterfeit merchandise bearing popular brands, such as Springboks-branded apparel. The seizure occurred during a series of coordinated search and seizure operations that also resulted in the discovery of manufacturing equipment and materials for producing counterfeit goods. Van Wyk urged the public to be cautious and purchase sports merchandise only from authorized retailers, and called on the public to report any suspected counterfeit goods to the relevant authorities.
