Chinese national rescued from Nepal tunnel 10 days after deadly floods

Two additional survivors have emerged alive from Nepal's devastating floods, providing a glimmer of hope as rescue efforts persist through mounds of debris and submerged hydropower tunnels. A Chinese national, named Luhaitao, was rescued from a tunnel affiliated with a hydropower project in the Trishuli region. Nepalese military forces, supported by South Korean disaster response experts, executed the challenging extraction.

Another rescue unfolded as 64-year-old Chandika Shrestha was discovered alive inside a home damaged by the floods in Nuwakot. Emergency responders carefully lifted her out and she was subsequently transported to Kathmandu for further medical care. #APFNepal #peacesecuritycommitment

The recent rescues followed closely on the heels of the dramatic recovery of two Nepali hydropower workers, Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan, who had been trapped for about nine days in a flooded tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower project. The rescue team utilized specialized digging methods, satellite imagery, and engineering expertise to clear the wreckage and locate the trapped individuals.

Both workers were airlifted to Kathmandu, with one reportedly in critical condition. Tragically, a body was also recovered from the site, while several others remain feared to be trapped in adjacent tunnels. The tragic floods, triggered by a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, have inundated Himalayan valleys, causing extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and hydropower facilities.

As the death toll climbs above 1,282 and rescue teams continue to scour collapsed structures and submerged tunnels, the discovery of survivors has reignited optimism that additional lives may yet be saved from the wreckage.
