Cape Fear Colts trot to victory in defensive battle with Jack Britt

Cape Fear Colts secured a 21-13 victory over Jack Britt in a defensive battle on September 4, marking a significant win after an early Week 2 bye due to inclement weather. The game saw both teams struggle offensively at the beginning, but Cape Fear managed to capitalize on several bursts of play. Junior quarterback Tres Daughtry ignited the offense with an impressive 60-yard pass to Davis Spruill, putting the Colts inside the red zone after the first offensive play from scrimmage.

Despite multiple attempts to score, Cape Fear turned the ball over at the 17-yard line, giving the Buccaneers an opportunity to set up for a play. However, Caiden Thompson of Jack Britt intercepted the ball, returning it 9 yards to give the Colts a favorable field position just before the first quarter ended. The second quarter started with Cape Fear setting up for a field goal at the 10-yard line on 4th-and-10.

Yet, the Buccaneers were penalized for being offside, allowing Cape Fear to advance five yards closer to the goal line.

Daughtry then executed a shovel pass to senior Jackson Carte, leading Cape Fear to a 7-0 halftime lead. At the start of the third quarter, the Colts faced a minor setback when Spruill's knee touched the ground at the 10-yard line while preparing for a punt, which put the Buccaneers in good field position and gave them the opportunity to score with freshman running back Tyler Shakir's rush for a touchdown. This evened the score at 7-7.

However, the game quickly shifted in Cape Fear's favor. Junior quarterback Daughtry passed to wide out Landon Underwood for 21 yards, pushing the Colts inside the Buccaneers' 10-yard line. A couple of plays later, Roderick Williams of Cape Fear scored, extending the lead to 15-7. As the Buccaneers attempted to overhaul their offensive struggles, they managed a final drive with Peter Figueroa scoring a touchdown, bringing the final score to 15-13 in Cape Fear's favor.
