Boise State takes lead over No. 2 Oregon a play after officials miss an obvious kick-catch interference penalty on an Oregon muffed punt

The Boise State Broncos took a commanding 14-7 lead over the No. 2 ranked Oregon Ducks in the second quarter of their game on Saturday, thanks to a 38-yard touchdown run by running back Sire Gaines. However, Oregon's Evan Stewart had already comically muffed a punt before the scoring play, with a photo circulating of the moment going viral.

While the Broncos' Jameson Perry didn't make direct contact with Stewart, he was in very close proximity as the wide receiver tried to catch the ball after calling for a fair catch. According to the NCAA rules, Boise State should have been penalized for kick-catch interference if Perry entered the one-yard area in front of Stewart before he made contact with the ball.

The NCAA's guidelines state that a player in position to catch a free kick or scrimmage kick that has crossed the neutral zone should be given an unimpeded opportunity to do so. If an opposing player entered the defined area, it would be an interference foul.

Unfortunately, the missed call wasn't flagged on the field and not reviewable. Since kick-catch interference is a judgment call, it isn't subject to replay review or a challenge. Despite the missed penalty, Gaines' strong play put Boise State in a strong position to continue their winning ways against Oregon.
