Bangladesh measles toll nears grim 1,000-child mark

Dhaka, Bangladesh - A deadly measles outbreak in Bangladesh is nearing a tragic milestone of 1,000 child deaths, as the epidemic continues to spread rapidly across the country. The South Asian nation, home to 170 million people, has seen over 180,000 suspected and confirmed cases of measles since March, with the majority of cases affecting children aged six months to five years.

The outbreak has overwhelmed hospital facilities, with Dhaka's Shishu Hospital reporting 101 children admitted with suspected or confirmed measles, many of whom are already critically ill due to factors such as malnutrition. Despite the government's efforts to combat the outbreak through a mass vaccination drive, the number of cases continues to rise, with more than 1,000 suspected cases reported daily.

Mothers like Rima Akter, who has lost two children to the disease, and Sanjana Islam Modina, whose six-month-old son Ayan spent 15 days in intensive care, highlight the devastating impact of the outbreak on families.
