Balkans: Israel deepens ties with Bosnian Serb separatists through Banja Luka trade office

The Israeli government has strengthened its relationship with Bosnian Serb separatists by opening a trade office in Banja Luka, the capital of Republika Srpska. This move comes as Israel faces increasing international isolation following its controversial actions in Gaza. Israeli Ambassador to Bosnia and Albania Galit Peleg, Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli, and Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik attended the inauguration of the Israeli Chamber of Commerce office.

Chikli, known for his support of Israel's policies towards Palestinians, attended the ceremony and praised the leadership of Republika Srpska as "true friends of Israel and the Jewish people." Dodik, who has been a key figure in fostering the entity's relationship with Israel, attended the event alongside Peleg. While the economic benefits of this move are unclear, it demonstrates the deepening ties between Israel and the Serbian-dominated entity, which has been pursuing an increasingly separatist agenda.

Republika Srpska's role in blocking Bosnia and Herzegovina from supporting Palestinian recognition at the United Nations in 2011 has earned Dodik political credit in Israel. The Balkans, being the European peninsula closest to the Middle East and North Africa, is strategic for Israel to counter Turkey and maintain influence in Eastern Europe.
