AstraZeneca’s Breast Cancer Drug Etcamah Gets US FDA Approval

AstraZeneca has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its breast cancer treatment camizestrant, now marketed as Etcamah. This marks a significant achievement for the pharmaceutical company, which faced opposition from an advisory panel earlier this year. Etcamah, sold under the brand name Etcamah, received clearance through the FDA's accelerated approval process and can be prescribed alongside other cancer treatments for patients with metastatic breast cancer who possess a specific genetic mutation associated with disease progression.

AstraZeneca anticipates that Etcamah could become a major revenue contributor, with the potential to generate over $5 billion in annual sales. However, current market forecasts project sales of approximately $2.3 billion by 2032. The drug functions as a hormone therapy, blocking estrogen from activating cancer cells and slowing their growth.

On average, Etcamah can delay disease progression by more than six months in eligible patients. The therapy is intended for breast cancer patients who develop a particular mutation during endocrine therapy, necessitating an FDA-approved diagnostic test to confirm the presence of the mutation before treatment. This approval bolsters AstraZeneca's standing in the competitive oncology market, as CEO Pascal Soriot has been expanding the company's oncology portfolio and launching successful therapies.

AstraZeneca relies on its oncology pipeline for sustained future growth and is also exploring opportunities in emerging healthcare segments, such as weight-loss treatments.
