Army graduates 924 Borno forest guards after rigorous training

The Nigerian Army has recently graduated 924 members of the Borno State Forest Guards after completing their rigorous training at the Nigerian Army Training Centre, Miango. This graduation ceremony, held on September 5, 2026, aimed to bolster the capacity of the forest guards to protect forest areas, safeguard nearby communities, and contribute to preserving Nigeria's natural resources.

In his welcome remarks, Major General Valentine Okoro, the Chief of Training (Army), emphasized the vital role forests play in sustaining biodiversity and livelihoods. He highlighted that the protection of these forests is a collective responsibility, and the graduation of the forest guards marked a significant step forward in enhancing forest security, community protection, and preservation of valuable natural resources.

Okoro noted that recent security challenges in certain forested regions had underscored the necessity of developing the skills and abilities of personnel capable of effectively safeguarding these areas and the communities surrounding them.

The training process was intensive, focusing on enhancing the knowledge, practical skills, physical endurance, discipline, and weapon-handling proficiency of the trainees. The Training Team Leader, Colonel RO Alieze, detailed that the recruits were meticulously organized and monitored throughout the training. He emphasized that discipline and physical fitness were essential qualities for a professional guard, and the training aimed to test and improve the trainees' endurance, tactical awareness, and resolve to perform their duties effectively.

Despite facing challenges, particularly communication barriers due to linguistic differences, the instructors effectively addressed these obstacles through interpretation, demonstrations, and practical exercises. This commitment to overcoming challenges was evident in the successful completion of the training program.

General Maxwell Dangana, the Commander of Operation ENDURING PEACE, underscored the strategic importance of forests to national security and environmental sustainability. He described forests as vital national assets that support biodiversity, protect the environment, and significantly contribute to community well-being. However, Dangana also pointed out that some forested areas have been exploited by criminal elements as hideouts for bandits, terrorists, and other hostile groups.

He charged the newly graduated forest guards to be vigilant in preventing and reporting illegal activities such as unauthorized entry, illegal logging, poaching, and bush burning.

The COAS further urged the guards to engage positively with local communities, educating them on the importance of forest conservation and promoting responsible use of Nigeria's natural resources. He stressed that their role in forest security, community protection, and the preservation of natural resources would be crucial in maintaining the nation's security and environmental health.
