Abia varsity lifts lecturer’s suspension after ASUU plea

Abia State University in Uturu has lifted the indefinite suspension of Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze, a lecturer in the Department of Economics. The university announced this decision in a letter dated September 3, 2026, signed by Acting Registrar Dr Joy Nwankwo. The letter, titled "Lifting of Suspension," revealed that the move was prompted by a written plea from the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ABSU chapter.

The university stated that this lifting is without prejudice to the ongoing investigation into Nwaeze, the outcome of which is yet to be determined. Nwaeze had previously voiced his concerns over the university's conditions on his Facebook page, highlighting issues like low salaries and unpaid allowances. Following the suspension, an investigative panel was established to probe the matter.

ABSU's industrial action against Nwaeze's recall was a key demand for the strike's conclusion. The Abia State Government maintained distance from the issue, regarding it as an internal university matter, although Governor Alex Otti later acceded to some of the union's demands. Absu-Abus Union chairman, Prof Chidi Mba, confirmed the suspension lifting on Saturday, stating that the union will continue handling the matter administratively.
