A niece allegedly stole nearly $700,000 from the aunt she cared for — experts warn longer lifespans worsen the issue

Around 63 million Americans serve as caregivers, making up nearly one in every four adults in the United States. Rhonda Orr was one of those caregivers, taking care of her aunt Mildred Callahan. In 2013, Callahan was initially written out of her estate, but Orr reconnected with Callahan in 2017 and began hiring caregivers for her aunt.

However, complaints against Orr began after she returned to Callahan's life, leading to Orr's arrest and theft charges. The issue of elder financial abuse is becoming more prevalent as people live longer, according to experts. Andrew L. Hope, founder of Hope Law, points out that as people age, they often require more assistance managing their finances, which increases the risk of financial abuse.

The case of Orr allegedly stealing nearly $700,000 from Callahan is not an isolated incident, and it highlights the need for stronger safeguards to protect vulnerable seniors.
