5 Great Shows That Were Completely Removed From Their Streaming Service Home

Over the past few years, streaming platforms have gained a troubling reputation for suddenly removing top-quality original programming from their platforms without any warning. In August 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made the shocking decision to halt the nearly finished Batgirl film, leaving the door open for other studios and companies to remove parts of their catalogue.

While these decisions often target cost-cutting measures, they rarely discriminate on quality, resulting in both great and mediocre series being affected by the snowball effect. Here are a few excellent shows that were completely removed from their streaming service homes.

Westworld, a popular HBO Max show that ran for four successful seasons, was abruptly removed from the streaming platform in December 2022. Warner Bros. Discovery claimed that removing the show and other original programming would help their bottom line, despite the fact that even major legacy properties and successful hits were vulnerable to removal in the modern entertainment landscape.

Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, a prequel to the 1978 movie, was praised for its fun and humorous take on the original story. The show was only a part of Paramount+'s one-season run from April to June 2023 before being axed along with several other original properties. Currently, it can only be purchased on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

Vinyl, an HBO series created by Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, and Terence Winter, starring a star-studded cast including Bobby Cannavale, Olivia Wilde, and Juno Temple, was a critical and audience favorite. Despite its positive reception, the show was canceled after one season in February 2016 and later removed from HBO Max, as part of Warner Bros. Discovery's cost-cutting measures. Today, the series is only available on Blu-ray and DVD through used copies on sites like eBay.

The Twilight Zone, rebooted with Jordan Peele as the Narrator, managed to receive a 70% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. However, eight months after the release of Season 2, the CBS series was surprisingly canceled in February 2021. The complete 20-episode series was living on Paramount+ until February 2023, when it was purged along with other original Paramount and Showtime content during Showtime's merger with Paramount.
