22 'govindas' injured during Dahi Handi in Mumbai

Mumbai witnessed the injury of twenty-two young participants, known as govindas, during the Dahi Handi celebrations on Saturday, according to civic officials. Of these, twenty-one individuals were treated and discharged from hospitals, while one person sustained minor injuries in an eastern suburb and has since been discharged after receiving medical care.

The remaining govinda, who was injured in a western suburb, remains under treatment at a local hospital. Dahi Handi, a popular festival marking the birth of Lord Krishna, sees a surge in participation as young people form multi-storeyed human pyramids to break clay pots filled with curd suspended in the air. The festivities are taking place with great enthusiasm across Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.

With the festival in full swing, the Mumbai police have bolstered security measures, increasing their presence in sensitive areas across the city. In preparation for the injured govindas, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ensured that sixteen civic-run suburban hospitals and major hospitals such as Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion, KEM Hospital in Parel, and Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central are ready to accommodate over a hundred patients each for their treatment.
