2027: How choice of running mate is reshaping Taraba politics

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has named Hajiya Zainab Ibrahim as his running mate to contest for a second term. Initially, Deputy Governor Alhaji Aminu Alkali, who has been with Kefas since 2023, was expected to run alongside him for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket. However, Alkali's reported ill health led to a search for a replacement, ultimately resulting in the selection of Zainab Ibrahim, the national woman leader of the APC and a well-known figure.

The choice of Zainab brings new dimensions to the race, particularly in terms of ethnic and gender factors. Ibrahim is from the Hausa-Fulani community in Jalingo, while Alkali is from the Mumuye ethnic group in the northern senatorial zone. Kefas consulted Mumuye stakeholders before making the decision to choose Zainab, but they were initially hesitant to accept Alkali as the replacement.

The Mumuye community, which traditionally votes en bloc, feels neglected by the decision, and many, especially the youth, may now support Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, the PDP governorship candidate. Bwacha also selected his running mate from Jalingo, which could impact the election outcome. The relationship between Kefas, Bwacha, and former Governor Jolly Nyame, a prominent Mumuye figure, adds another layer to the political landscape.
