Witkoff, Kushner heading abroad to discuss Ukraine peace, Trump says

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, are set to journey abroad to negotiate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, according to President Trump. In an Oval Office briefing, the president hinted at a concrete proposal to bring an end to the ongoing conflict, which has been raging for five years.

However, he refrained from providing specific details about the proposal or the destination of Witkoff and Kushner's trip. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that the two men would fly to Ukraine on Sunday after stopping by Moscow. Trump expressed confidence in the duo's negotiation skills, stating that they have been effective in their previous roles.

While the initial plan was to travel to Moscow followed by a visit to Kyiv, the itinerary has been subject to recent changes, and the Kyiv segment remains uncertain. The US administration's efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict have thus far been unsuccessful, with negotiations stalling in recent months. Intelligence sources suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin is more inclined to escalate than de-escalate the war, while Ukrainian intelligence believes he may opt for further escalation rather than de-escalation in the near term.

On Friday, a Russian drone strike targeted Ukraine's SBU security service headquarters in Kyiv, marking one of the war's most significant attacks. Witkoff, the primary US negotiator on Ukraine, has visited Moscow multiple times but has yet to set foot in Ukraine.
