Thornton's behavior on the flight drew the attention of a fellow passenger who raised a complaint, leading to his interrogation by police upon his arrival at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14.

TMZ initially reported on the suspension, subsequently sharing screenshots of questionable chat room activity from the passenger. Following a comprehensive investigation, Sony Pictures Television terminated Thornton's employment with "Wheel of Fortune," three days after his initial suspension. The studio provided no further details on the allegations, but the incident eventually reached the point where the pilot contacted law enforcement to meet Thornton at the gate.
