We should support Nepal’s cause – on the ground and in the UN

Nepal has recently faced devastating floods that have left thousands of people suffering and in need of aid. The courageous efforts of the Nepal army in rescuing those affected have been commendable, but the scale of the disaster is immense. In response to this humanitarian crisis, the UAE has demonstrated its commitment to global compassion and solidarity by sending essential food supplies and power generators to Nepal.

Such timely assistance provides immediate relief to affected communities and helps kick-start the recovery process.

The floods have also highlighted the issue of climate change and its disproportionate impact on vulnerable nations. Despite contributing only 0.1 percent of global emissions, Nepal is facing severe consequences such as melting glaciers, erratic monsoons, and catastrophic floods. This raises the question of "loss and damage" – the need for compensation and accountability from countries that have historically contributed to climate change through the industrialization of fossil fuels.

It is only fair that those responsible take greater responsibility for rebuilding and supporting nations like Nepal.

On a more personal level, the loss of loved ones during these floods has left many families grieving and in need of support. Condolences are extended to all affected families, and the strength and resilience of humanity in the face of tragedy is celebrated. The 97-year-old survivor of the floods is seen as a symbol of hope and a message of strength for Nepal and its people. Despite the immense loss, there is always hope for healing, rising, and standing stronger together.
