A judge declared a mistrial on Friday in the US murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, who is accused of killing her three young children. The trial, which lasted nearly six weeks and was televised, reignited discussions about postpartum mental health treatment for women and how the legal system handles cases involving mothers killing their children.

Clancy, 36, allegedly strangled her children with exercise bands in the basement of their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. She then attempted to take her own life by cutting herself with a knife and jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed. Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, argued that Clancy suffered from postpartum psychosis and should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.

However, jurors sent three notes indicating they had reached an impasse, leading Judge William Sullivan to declare a mistrial. The Plymouth County District Attorney, Tim Cruz, stated that it is the office's job to seek justice in cases like this. Clancy is set to appear in court for a follow-up hearing on September 29. Despite Clancy's history of mental health struggles, prosecutors argued that she had the capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions and intentionally chose to kill her children.
