USS Abraham Lincoln's Rust-Covered Arrival In Thailand Reveals Toll Of 286-Day Combat Deployment

The USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier, docked at a Thai port on September 2nd, appearing far from its former state after a 286-day combat deployment. The massive warship, stretching over 1,100 feet, was visibly marred by rust, a common sight for vessels that have spent extended periods at sea. The extensive corrosion running across the hull was not unusual for a ship that had remained continuously at sea for 60 days or more, according to former US Navy captain Carl Schuster.

Addressing such corrosion while the ship is deployed is a significant challenge, particularly in combat zones. Repair crews would need to work closely with the waterline, remove the rust, apply corrosion-resistant primer, and then paint the ship. Schuster estimated that around 30 days of preservation work would be required to fully restore the vessel. Some repair work may be possible while the carrier is in port, but the limited time frame would likely focus on the most urgent areas.

The Lincoln docked at Laem Chabang Port, Thailand, marking its first major break since the demanding deployment. The crew was granted a few days of rest and recreation following their extensive period at sea. However, the vessel’s prolonged deployment has brought other challenges, including declining morale due to supply shortages and at least one reported incident of a sailor falling overboard. Despite these issues, US President Donald Trump has dismissed concerns surrounding the deployment.
