Ukrainian quits college team over Russian signing

Kate Koval, a Ukrainian college basketball player at Louisiana State University, has announced her departure from the team. The 20-year-old Koval cited the Russian signing of Anna Minaeva as the reason for her decision to leave. Koval, whose father serves in the Ukrainian military, expressed her deep concern over the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

She wrote on Instagram that the war is not distant for her, as people close to her have been killed and wounded in Russian attacks, and her hometown has been destroyed by missile strikes. Koval stated that the timing of the situation and its profound impact on her, her family, and those still fighting the war led her to question if LSU remained the right place for her.

Despite understanding the reasons behind roster changes in college basketball, Koval felt it was important to remain true to her values and her country. The transfer portal had closed, but Koval hoped the NCAA would recognize the seriousness of the circumstances she faced and allow her to transfer to another university for the upcoming season.

Koval expressed her gratitude for the relationships, experiences, and memories she made at LSU, but emphasized that she felt she had found a home there.
