Ukraine proposes creating international consortium to manage strategic logistics hubs

Ukraine is reportedly considering the formation of an international consortium to oversee critical logistics hubs, according to foreign and domestic policy expert Liudmyla Pokrovshchuk. During a press conference on the topic of food security in the face of Russian aggression, Pokrovshchuk suggested that such a consortium could be established to manage logistics hubs that significantly impact economic security and geoeconomics.

To ensure the continuity of long-term export contracts and maintain its standing on global markets, Pokrovshchuk emphasized the necessity of not only identifying alternative routes but also constructing them, potentially across other nations' territories.

Oleksiy Buriachenko, president of the International Institute for Security Studies, underscored the global importance of Ukrainian logistics. Traditionally, Ukrainian 'solidarity lanes' have supplied grain to around 400 million individuals worldwide, and Russian strikes on logistics have repercussions extending beyond Ukraine to global prices and food security.

Buriachenko advocated for leveraging these logistics hubs as leverage against Russia to stabilize the Black Sea region.

Yaroslav Zhalilo, a doctor of economic sciences and deputy director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, cautioned that alternative logistics alone are insufficient and a holistic state policy is required. He explained that merely attempting to build alternative logistics pathways is not sufficient; rather, complementary compensators need to be created at the state policy level to facilitate effective adaptation.

Military-political commentator Denys Popovych proposed decentralizing logistics to diminish dependence on large warehouses. Popovych advocated for a shift towards distributed logistics, possibly through direct sales from trucks or the establishment of smaller enterprises where goods are sold upon arrival, rather than accumulating in large warehouses.
