UK replies to Milei: Falklands “are British because islanders choose to be British”

British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting unequivocally affirmed on Friday that the United Kingdom's dedication to the Falkland Islands remains "absolute and unshakeable." This statement came in response to Argentine President Javier Milei's televised national address, during which he announced sanctions against oil companies operating in the region without Argentine approval.

Streeting emphasized on X, "Milei's statement overnight tells us more about domestic politics in Argentina than it does about the Falkland Islands. The Falklands are British because Falkland Islanders choose to be British. Our commitment to the Falklands is absolute and unshakeable." Milei's remarks seemed to focus more on Argentina's internal affairs rather than the Falklands themselves.

Milei restated that the archipelago is "historically and legally" Argentine and argued that the islanders on the "usurped territory do not have a legitimate right to self-determination." He further claimed that the islands "are our future" and that Argentina "needs to recover these islands." Milei also issued a decree to expedite the sanctions under Law 26,659 against hydrocarbon extraction companies in the disputed area, extending these measures to shareholders, directors, and suppliers.

The Sea Lion field, operated by Britain's Rockhopper Exploration and Israel's Navitas Petroleum, was labeled a "clear and present danger." The announcement came after US President Donald Trump opted not to pledge support for the UK in any future conflict over the islands, recalling the 1982 war and stating that the British "comported themselves very well" but took the islands "pretty strongly."

Trump criticized London for failing to back the US in the Iran conflict and did not offer any commitment regarding the Falklands dispute. As per the US stance, the nation is formally neutral in the dispute, although it provided aid to Britain during the 1982 conflict. Hours before Milei's address, US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers shared a photo with Milei on X, captioned, "exciting things are happening in the Western Hemisphere."

The British government's stance on the Falklands has been consistently "long-standing and unwavering," with sovereignty residing with the United Kingdom, and the islanders' right to self-determination being "paramount." In the 2013 referendum, monitored by observers from six countries, the Falkland Islanders voted 99.8% in favor of maintaining British Overseas Territory status, with only three votes against.

Argentina has not acknowledged this vote. The Falkland Islands Government commented on Milei's address at the time of publication.
