UK rebuffs Milei on Malvinas, vows to keep British control

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has reaffirmed Britain's unwavering control over the Malvinas Islands, in response to Argentine President Javier Milei's push for the South Atlantic island chain. In a social media statement, Miliband stated, "The Islands are British and will remain so because that is the overwhelming position of the Islanders."

Milei threatened new sanctions on oil companies operating in the region, in an attempt to assert Argentina's claim to the islands, known as the Falklands in the UK. The Argentine leader's remarks came after US President Donald Trump hinted that the US wouldn't aid the UK in a potential conflict over the islands. This stance marks a departure from Milei's predecessors who typically vowed to reclaim the islands following Britain's consolidation of control following a brief war in 1982.

Milei declared, "The Malvinas are Argentine. Historically and legally," asserting no argument exists for self-determination by the islanders. The push by Milei may be an attempt to rally voters, as his approval rating has fallen to near the lowest of his presidency. Meanwhile, a British-linked offshore energy project in the region, Sea Lion, is nearing production.

Shares of Israeli company Navitas Petroleum, which holds a majority stake in the project, and British partner Rockhopper Exploration Plc dropped significantly following Milei's remarks.
