Turkmenistan Moves to Tackle Major Methane Leaks

Turkmenistan is tackling major methane leaks in its energy infrastructure, per a UN report. Methane, a gas component of natural gas, significantly contributes to global warming. The UN's Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) identified Turkmenistan as one of the world's leading sources of methane leaks. MARS reported that three of the six worst leaks detected in the past six months originated from Turkmenistan, alongside nine of the top 50.

Turkmenistan addressed around 40 out of the 192 methane leak instances brought to the attention of officials by MARS. The government has repaired at least eight significant leaks, with a UN official describing Turkmenistan's actions as "an incredible first step." Turkmenistan's energy infrastructure modernization plans aim to strengthen the country's natural gas infrastructure.

Despite Turkmenistan's media environment being one of the most controlled globally, the country is slowly opening up, with officials expressing interest in integrating into the Middle Corridor trade network and potentially exporting natural gas to Western markets. Turkmenistan signed the Global Methane Pledge in 2024, aiming for a 30% global methane emissions reduction by 2030.

Researchers at Turkmenistan's Academy of Sciences have developed a new biological product capable of neutralizing methane emissions in the soil, showcasing the country's commitment to sustainable development and environmental control in the energy sector.
