The Women’s Super League’s official fantasy game is here. Can it be a success?

The Women’s Super League (WSL) has introduced an official fantasy game to complement its new season, which officially began on August 19, 2026. This move aims to boost engagement among current fans and attract new ones, following the success of the popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL). FPL was launched in 2002 ahead of the 2002-03 season and boasts over 13 million users worldwide.

The WSL's fantasy game presents a unique challenge, as it must cater to the distinct preferences of women's football fans. Joey Davidson, head of digital products at the WSL, notes that the core fans of women's football differ significantly from those of men's football. Prior to the official game, there was an unofficial Fantasy WSL version called Aerial Fantasy by Even Sports, which gained popularity but eventually closed at the end of last season, citing financial sustainability concerns.

To create the official WSL fantasy game, the league collaborated with Sportz Interactive, handling UEFA's fantasy league offerings. This partnership, while controversial among some fans, aimed to address the shortcomings of previous iterations and provide a more engaging experience for users. The development process involved surveys and research with approximately 7,000 fans to understand their preferences, focusing on community building and adaptability throughout the year.

The official game features a unique "leg system," dividing the season into six mini-seasons, each lasting three to six matches. This allows new fans to join and remain competitive throughout the year, rather than waiting for the traditional season-long competition. The game bundles players from both the WSL and WSL2, increasing the number of selectable players and adding variety to the fantasy experience.
