The museum where Malaysia’s ghost stories take shape

The Melaka Ghost Museum in Malaysia is more than just a venue for spine-chilling scares. It is a place dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich folklore and legends of the region through physical representations of supernatural beings. Spanning across three floors and featuring over 40 sculptures, the museum showcases a diverse array of entities, including the iconic pontianak, langsuir, and penanggal, as well as characters from other cultures around the world.

General manager Muhammad Fitri Abdullah emphasizes that each sculpture is the result of extensive research into folklore, myths, legends, cultural traditions, and historical accounts. The team also drew inspiration from community stories, accounts from individuals familiar with the supernatural figures, and traditional visual depictions.

By meticulously recreating each character, including details such as clothing, facial expressions, and body shape, the museum aims to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the stories behind these entities rather than merely eliciting fear.

Fitri clarifies that the museum's sculptures are a fusion of art, folklore, culture, and horror elements, rather than mere ghostly figures. The creation process itself varied in duration depending on the size and level of detail of each sculpture, with many crafted using traditional handcrafting techniques either by the museum's own team or in collaboration with artists and sculptors.

Unlike haunted-house attractions that focus solely on jump scares, the Melaka Ghost Museum seeks to educate and entertain its visitors. The museum periodically refreshes its exhibits to maintain their unsettling appearance. For those feeling particularly adventurous, costumes are available for interactive experiences that allow visitors to embody the supernatural beings they have encountered.
