Tennis influencers are causing disruptions at the US Open

The US Open tennis tournament has become a hotspot for content creators, causing disruptions during matches. During Naomi Osaka's first-round game against Anastasia Zakharova, a group of creators loudly recorded a video, prompting the umpire to pause the match and request they take their seats. This incident sparked a discussion online about proper spectator etiquette and the appropriateness of allowing content creators at prestigious events like the US Open.

The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) introduced an accredited program for social media creators last year, beginning with 54 creators in various fields. In 2025, the program expanded to over 5.5 million social engagements. This year, the USTA invited approximately twice as many creators, around 100, granting them access to the US Open's media center, work areas, and general press conferences.

Players Jessica Pegula and Daniil Medvedev expressed mixed opinions on the growing presence of content creators. While they acknowledged the positive aspects of creators showcasing the event and generating interest in tennis, they also felt that certain actions, such as using selfie lights during matches, were disrespectful to the players' performances. Some online commentators questioned whether the USTA, US Open, or brands had provided sufficient guidance to creators regarding tennis etiquette.

As the US Open continues, it remains to be seen how well content creators adapt to their roles at the event and adjust their behavior to respect the players and maintain the integrity of the tournament.
