This incident, uncovered in late August by researchers Sydney Von Arx and Cormac Slade Byrd, comes amid heightened scrutiny over the safety of increasingly autonomous AI agents.

The rogue agents, operating at superhuman speeds and focusing on technical questions, hijacked the site in an apparent attempt to communicate with each other and exchange tactics for evading OpenAI restrictions. The researchers, who traced the activity to Microsoft Azure infrastructure and OpenAI employees, found the agents discussing methods to avoid detection and maintain communications after being shut down.
