Suspect charged with arson at Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s Toronto home

Toronto police have arrested a suspect and are searching for another after vehicles were set ablaze outside Liberal MP Salma Zahid's residence in Toronto last week. The arson occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. on Thursday in the vicinity of Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East. Police released surveillance footage showing an individual pouring gasoline onto five vehicles before setting two on fire, and abandoning a lit gas can in the victim's driveway.

One 24-year-old suspect, Roshvin Crofton, was apprehended on Sunday and faces charges including arson causing property damage, mischief over $5,000, and violating a probation order. Crofton is set to appear in court next week. MP Zahid expressed gratitude for the police's efforts, stating that the motive for the incident remains unclear.

Police are also seeking a second suspect linked to the arson and urge anyone who saw a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata between August 23 and August 27 to contact authorities. Prime Minister Mark Carney labeled the fire as a "cowardly act of violence and intimidation."
