Suspect arrested, another sought, after vehicles at MPs Scarborough home set on fire

Toronto police have arrested a suspect and are searching for another following several vehicles being set on fire at the Scarborough home of MP Salma Zahid. Emergency services were alerted to the incident in the early hours of Thursday, August 27, at Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East. A security camera captured a suspect dressed in black pouring a flammable substance onto the hoods of five parked cars, setting some ablaze.

Three vehicles sustained damage. Toronto Police released footage showing the suspect setting the vehicles alight on August 27, 2026. Later that day, on August 30, 2026, 24-year-old Roshvin Crofton was apprehended and charged with arson, property damage, conspiracy, and possession of incendiary material. He may also be held in breach of a probation order.

Police are seeking a second suspect and information about a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata that was observed in the area between August 23 and August 27, 2026. MP Zahid stated that her home was not damaged but expressed concern over the incident, urging speculation on the motive to wait on investigation results. Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced the act as "a cowardly act of violence," while Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow praised the police for their swift response and commended the family's safety.
