Spring Agro Industries urges Ghanaians to choose local rice as imports dominate market

Ghana's increasing reliance on imported rice is straining local producers, with Spring Agro Industries Limited urging consumers to support locally grown rice to sustain jobs, farmers, and investments in the domestic rice industry. The company, established in 2019, has invested in rice farming, processing, and production at its farms in Adidome and Akuse, and has a modern processing facility at Adidome.

Spring Agro Industries produces Striker Gold Rice, a premium Jasmine aromatic rice that is non-GMO and undergoes careful processing for quality, aroma, and consistency. Despite these investments, imported rice still holds a significant market share, making consumer patronage crucial for the survival and expansion of local rice businesses.

The company states that every bag of locally produced rice bought supports a chain of livelihoods, from farmers to factory workers, transport operators, distributors, retailers, and other businesses within the agricultural value chain. By increasing demand for local rice, the company believes it can create jobs, strengthen farming communities, keep more economic value within Ghana, and reduce the country's dependence on imported food.

Spring Agro Industries is urging consumers, businesses, institutions, and government agencies to choose locally produced rice over imported alternatives, especially during the upcoming Christmas season. The company has commended the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and Deputy Minister John Dumelo for promoting locally produced rice and calls for stronger implementation, particularly in public and institutional procurement.

Spring Agro Industries believes Ghana has the necessary land, farmers, technical expertise, and processing capacity to produce quality rice in commercial quantities, challenging the belief that imported rice is inherently superior.
