South Korea mulls ‘contributions’ in Strait of Hormuz

South Korea’s presidential office has denied recent media reports suggesting the country is preparing a military deployment to the Strait of Hormuz. Officials stated that “nothing has been decided” and that internal evaluations are still ongoing. The denial comes after domestic media reported that South Korea was considering sending forces, including a P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, a logistics support ship, and an explosive ordnance disposal unit, through the strategic waterway.

The government insists that it continues to consult closely with international partners to find practical ways to support freedom of navigation and regional stability. This controversy arises amid heightened pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who had criticized South Korea for its reluctance to commit military assets to the region, leading to a reduction in the duration of the joint "Ulchi Freedom Shield" military exercises.

South Korea is particularly reliant on the Strait of Hormuz, as it accounts for over 90 percent of the country's primary energy imports and approximately 70 percent of its crude oil imports. Any future military deployment would require formal approval from the National Security Council, the cabinet, and ultimately the National Assembly.
