Some Ghana Premier League players are paid GHS300 – Ketu North MP

Ketu North Member of Parliament and President of Nukunu Sports Academy, Edem Agbana, has expressed concern over the meager wages paid to some Ghana Premier League players. During a recent interview with Sporty FM ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, Agbana revealed that he encountered a player who informed him that he had been paid a mere GHS300.

Agbana emphasized that the financial struggles faced by these players are indicative of larger issues plaguing clubs, rather than mere decisions made by team owners. He disclosed that some players in Ghana's top division earn less than GHS1,000, indicating the economic pressures impacting domestic football. However, Agbana argued against placing the entire blame on club owners, attributing the issue to declining attendance and inadequate infrastructure, which pose significant hurdles to boosting players' earnings.

As the head of Nukunu Sports Academy, Agbana highlighted the considerable financial investment required to run a football club despite minimal returns. He noted that team owners face challenges due to low patronage and subpar facilities. This statement coincides with Ghanaian football gearing up for its upcoming league campaign, set to commence on September 5, 2026, with 18 clubs vying for the national title.

The renewed focus is on the financial challenges confronting players and clubs nationwide as clubs seek increased investments and support to bolster the domestic football landscape.
