Singapore says 52 citizens arrested in China in suspected pyramid scheme probe

Chinese authorities have detained 52 Singaporean nationals in Guangxi province, according to Singapore's Foreign Ministry. The alleged motive is a suspected pyramid scheme operation, with related offenses also under investigation. Singapore's second minister for foreign affairs, Sim Ann, stated that Singapore is in communication with Chinese authorities to gather additional information.

Embassy staff have visited the 52 detainees and are offering consular assistance. The ministry did not provide specifics on the arrest dates, identities, or financial details. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that China conducts criminal investigations of foreign citizens consistent with its laws and regulations.

Sim Ann cautioned Singaporeans to be wary of such schemes, particularly those involving recruitment, large initial payments, and promises of high returns, as pyramid schemes typically function on the principle of recruiting new participants and charging substantial fees upfront.
