'Shame on you': fight over dog turns to hit-and-run

A newlywed couple in Doonside, western Sydney, endured a harrowing ordeal after their neighbour, Corey John Porter, rammed his car into them in March 2024. The incident began with a heated argument over the dog next door. Porter, who was intoxicated, hopped into his white SUV, revved the engine and struck the couple, causing serious injuries.

His wife, still reeling from the trauma, expressed her pain and disbelief, saying, "We did not ask for this to happen and in a split second my life changed forever." Both Porter and his wife required hospitalization, with his wife suffering bruises and a head injury, and he endured a lengthy surgery. Porter, 31, appeared via video-link in court, wearing a green T-shirt.

He apologized to the victims and his own lawyer, admitting his intention to seek assistance to overcome his struggles with alcoholism. The court heard that Porter had called emergency services after the incident, though he denied the intent to cause serious harm. The judge directed a five-offense sentence for Porter, including causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The couple's honeymoon has been delayed until Porter's sentencing on October 22.
